MoMA Comments

I just noticed that the MoMA has an area for customer comments.  What a nice surprise to see all the very nice things that people said about my holiday cards.  Thank you to everyone who commented for making my day!

Paper craft Christmas tree

My new paper crafting book with Dover Publications is out just in time for Christmas decorating! "My Christmas Tree" contains a 16.5" tall tree, 16 ornaments, and a star topper to pop out and assemble. Barnes and Noble does not have it in stores but they have it online here: My Christmas Tree.

New MoMA Cards!

It's MoMA card time! The cards I illustrated and engineered for the Museum of Modern Art are up on their website and in their NYC store. I am really excited with how they turned out. They did a great job with the manufacturing. You can see these 2 brand new cards and the 5 other cards of mine that they are selling this year by clicking here: MoMA Cards

Mio and Mao

Have you seen the show Mio Mao on Direct Tv's BabyFirst channel?  It is the cutest show I've ever seen.  It has everything I like, it's vintage (1970s), minimalistic, unpolished in a good way, brightly colored, clever, and about kitties!  And who doesn't love claymation?! This is the episode that was on this morning at 7am.  Tell me this isn't the cutest thing you've ever seen!!

Love for B Online Auction

This is a sad story.  I donated some art to the Love for B online auction.  At the time, Bethany Cocco was fighting a battle against lung cancer and the auction was organized to raise money for out of the country treatment that was hopefully going to be a miracle and save her.  Sadly Bethany passed away a month before the auction went live.  But the auction continues on and is now raising money to help her family pay the medical bills that she left behind.  I did not know Bethany personally but she was a friend of a friend and I like to help out when I can.  If you'd like to help out by buying some nice art you can head over to the auction by clicking here:  Love for B Online Auction.  I donated a signed copy of my BFF pets book and a fun little original sketch from the book.  You can see and purchase my item here:  BFF Pets.  Someone has already started the bidding on my item.  Hooray!

Pastel mess

Here is the page from my sketchbook that resulted in the mess I described in my facebook post .  To summarize, I did one hour of pastel drawing which resulted in this drawing and pastel all over my desk, ground into my rug, smeared inside my sneakers, and covering 7 pairs of socks.  Oh no, I just realized it's smeared on my scanner now too.  I think I'll be working in digital pastels from now on.

Catalog season!

It's catalog season and I love to catalog shop!  Well actually, I love any kind of shopping.  But catalogs are fun because you can tear out the pages and make a big pile of all the lovely things you want to buy.

When I first set out to be a product designer I dreamed of seeing my creations in stores.  It never occurred to me that I would someday see my products in catalogs!  This month was an especially exciting one for product spotting.   My products showed up in the MoMA's Design Store catalog and the Art Institute of Chicago's gift catalog, two of my favorites.  Hooray!

Wacom Inkling

Fortunately I bought a Wacom Inkling this week at a great price.  Unfortunately the great price was because it has been discontinued.  Here is my first ever sketch with my $50 Inkling.  After I drew the sketch I exported the drawing as an Illustrator file, simplified the strokes, cleaned it up, and changed the brush stroke.  Sadly it didn't didn't come out of the pen looking like this which is probably why the thing has been discontinued.  I think it's a really great tool with a lot of potential.  I wish they had tried improving it instead of ditching it.

Happy Birthday Abraham Lincoln!

Today is the perfect day to announce my new new book Standups! Presidents. I hope Lincoln would have enjoyed my paper craft depiction of him. I also hope that somehow, someday President Obama sees my depiction of him. This book was so fun to create. I think it's one of my favorites that I've done. I hope I get to do more paper craft caricatures soon!

"Rustic Automata" video

This quirky little video about "rustic automata" creator Blair Somerville is very inspiring.  It makes me want to create some useless paper automata.
